Andrew Carey

Role:

I am a partner in the Debt Capital Markets practice in London and Co-Head of Impact Financing. I work closely with our HL BaSE team on Social and Development Impact Bonds and other financings.

Why I am part of HL BaSE:

As Co-Head of Impact Financing, I work with our clients to future proof their businesses and attract capital in a growing ESG-focused investor market. Through HL BaSE we have the opportunity to provide support and training to young lawyers and social entrepreneurs to encourage sustainable business growth.  I am also myself a Director of a small Impact-focused research company that is exploring innovative structured finance solutions to help victim countries of international bribery and corruption recover stolen assets; so I have some idea of the challenges that a small social enterprise faces.

Stefanie Chan

Stefanie Chan

Role:

I am based in the Paris office of Hogan Lovells, and my work as Citizenship Advisor allows me to develop our pro bono and social enterprise work in Continental Europe. My previous experiences as an legal associate and in non-profit environmental policy have given me both the corporate and social impact perspectives needed to help support the BaSE programme.

Why I am part of HL BaSE:

The programme is an incredibly innovative way for Hogan Lovells to use our legal talents for the greater good, while simultaneously benefiting our firm through training our junior lawyers. Our pro bono/social enterprise work is a great way for a young lawyer to gain legal and business experience, and learn client management skills early in their career. It’s also a great way to inspire our young lawyers and allow them to build their network, both within and outside of the firm.

I am an energy lawyer based in London. As part of my role, I work with a range of companies to advise on climate risk and the energy transition. As a United Nations "Young Innovator", I spend a lot of time thinking about how Hogan Lovells can help its clients and people be more innovative and sustainable.

Why I am part of HL BaSE:

BaSE is a fantastic programme designed to up-skill young lawyers and rewire the way they think about and interact with their clients (for both chargeable and pro bono work) to drive greater impact. The social enterprises we work with have brilliant businesses and it is exciting to see them benefit from the knowledge and enthusiasm of the BaSE participants.

Yasmin Waljee OBE

Yasmin Waljee OBE

Role:

I am the International Pro Bono Director at Hogan Lovells and responsible for the pro bono, social enterprise and social finance practices at the firm. My other work includes Board Membership of Mosaic, HRH Prince of Wales led initiative to support young Muslims and peers growing up in deprived areas and I sit on the Advisory Board of the Social Innovation Group at the British Council.

Why I am part of HL BaSE:

I have long believed that the ingenuity of enterprise could be harnessed to promote a better future for all. Whilst in the business world, entrepreneurs act as engines of growth, and I have always seen the potential of the movement of social entrepreneurs to use their creativity and drive to challenge fundamental inequalities in the global community.

This was the motivation that propelled me to seek out the specialist knowledge of my remarkable colleagues at Hogan Lovells and find a way to combine their expertise with the social innovation movement to address the complex needs of the most disadvantaged in society – it started with a tea pot.. .. my inspiration came from meeting and assisting Charlotte Di Vita MBE who in 1997 travelled to China to help revive a traditional 17th-century enamelling technique used in the Chinese Imperial Court.  Charlotte traced a master craftsman who had been trained by court masters of the Forbidden City.  In 1998 Charlotte designed a range of handcrafted and hand-painted miniature enamel collectable teapots.   Demand for the product immediately exceeded supply and created secure employment and fair working conditions for over 300 Chinese artists and craftspeople. A remarkable story and a remarkable way to start my HL BaSE journey.
