Can we build back better? How do we build back better? HL BaSE, Hogan Lovells' impact economy practice, asks responsible business leader Mike Barry how to drive change and find solutions for a sustainable future.
"With human ingenuity and the resourcefulness of business we can pull back from the precipice but we ain't got much time. All of us need to throw our shoulder to the wheel and push to build back better now."
Mike talks about a generational shift in expectations and demand for a more equitable political and economic system. He warns that the impact of COVID will be nothing compared to the impact of the climate crisis on our way of life. Luckily, as a perennial optimist and an experienced changemaker, Mike has tips for business and individuals on how to step forward, drive change and build back better.
For many years Mike Barry was Head of Sustainable Business at UK retailer Marks & Spencer and was central to the development and delivery of the company's ground breaking Plan A, which has the overarching aim of making M&S the “most sustainable retailer in the UK”, setting out ambitious targets around carbon, waste and resources, water, human rights and community engagement. Mike continues his work to build a truly sustainable future and is involved in organisations such as Clim8, an Impact investing platform for environmental investments and Blueprint for Better Business a charity that helps business to be inspired and guided by purpose.
