Hogan Lovell's Business and Social Enterprise Practice ("HL BaSE"): Business as a force for good.

What is HL BaSE?

HL BaSE is Hogan Lovells' international social enterprise and social finance practice. We believe in business as a force for good and our HL BaSE team works closely with some exceptional clients that are leading the way on responsible and sustainable business.

"Whether developing new technology to combat climate change or advancing healthcare in underserved communities, we are in awe of the creativity and drive that our clients show as they push for real and sustainable change." Harry Wright, Social Enterprise Associate

We have been providing legal support to social enterprises for over 10 years and have advised in over 25 countries, involving every one of our practice areas, to support the growth of the social enterprise and impact investment sectors. For example, in 2017, we invested over 5,500 hours of advice, involving over 350 lawyers, and invested more than $2.68 million.

Our team works specifically in 3 key areas: HL BaSE Legal, HL BaSE training and HL BaSE Catalyst:

HL BaSE Legal:

HL BaSE Legal is a thriving legal practice, advising social business, charities and impact investment projects on the full spectrum of legal issues that they face. We offer flexible charging arrangements which includes the offer of pro bono or deferred fees where the organisation has a demonstrable social impact.

We work to address any legal issues that are a barrier to scale and sustainability, whether that is by supporting its clients to become investment ready, restructuring at the point of scale or protecting their intellectual property.

HL BaSE Training:

HL BaSE Training is a mini-MBA style course for trainee and junior lawyers, developing their commercial skills and social impact. The programme runs in London, Hong Kong and New York, ensuring that junior lawyers joining the firm are familiar with the importance of social impact to all of our clients. The programme is delivered in partnership with Ashoka, a global network of Ashoka fellows, the world's leading social entrepreneurs. A key part of the programme is a workshop in which social enterprises can access pro bono legal support form a small team of junior lawyers who go on to advise for the next 6 months.

"One of the most pioneering education programs for newly qualified lawyers anywhere in the world. The integration of social enterprise and best business practice that HL BaSE achieves is both visionary and inspirational" Mark Cheng, European Director, Ashoka

As such, we have helped over 800 trainee and junior lawyers, 100 social enterprises, spanning over 3 different continents.

HL BaSE Catalyst:

HL BaSE Catalyst is a programme of pro bono support for social enterprises provided by volunteers from Hogan Lovells and our clients. Part of the programme is a series of afternoon workshops during which social entrepreneurs can receive bespoke and confidential advice from a small team of senior lawyers on a particular issue.

Our workshops also offer social entrepreneurs guidance in other business areas, such as Marketing and Human Resources, by drawing on the expertise of volunteers from Hogan Lovells' internal Business Services teams.

At HL BaSE, we are proud to work with social innovators, helping to build the foundation for sustainable value for our clients and stakeholders.
